The Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) is an international organization of more than 10,000 members throughout the United States, Canada and 20 other countries. Headquartered in Lincolnshire, Illinois, the ALA is structured into six regions and 109 chapters representing firms of all sizes. Founded in 1977, the New York City Chapter has approximately 500 members and serves primarily Manhattan with some members from surrounding areas as well.
The New York City Chapter provides quality educational programs and a variety of information resources on the local level. More information can be found in About ALA. In order to become a member of the New York City Chapter, individuals must also join and maintain membership in the national organization.
Regular Membership
Regular membership in the ALA is open to full-time legal administrators, regardless of title, who are employed by a private law firm, legal service clinic, corporate legal department, university legal department, governmental legal agency, court system, charitable legal agency, or other organization engaged primarily in the practice of law. Eligibility requires that legal administrators must exercise management responsibilities full-time or, if not full-time, must devote 75% or more of their working time in performing the management responsibilities of the position.
Associate Members
Associate membership is available for those individuals interested in legal administration, but who do not meet the criteria for regular or international affiliate membership, and who are:

Membership in the association is not open to consultants or vendors.
Fees
Membership in the New York City Chapter in the New York City Chapter runs from April 1 to March 31. Membership is $275 per year.
